There are many conditions in which silverfish can thrive and survive, so do not feel bad if you find yourself asking what you did that allowed silverfish to make your home their own. Here at Planet Orange, we can show you how to get rid of silverfish through the use of silverfish control, but it is also important to understand how you wound up with an infestation in the first place.
How do Silverfish get into your Home?
The following issues can lead to silverfish getting into your house:
- Environmental conditions
- Temperature
- Availability of food
- Unintentional transmission
Understanding what causes a silverfish infestation can be exceptionally beneficial in helping you avoid such infestations in the future.
1.) Environmental Conditions
Silverfish are able to thrive in certain conditions, so it should be fairly evident that allowing these conditions to exist in your home is essentially an invitation for silverfish infestation. If there is food lying around the house or damp conditions in your bathroom, it becomes much more likely that silverfish will be able to survive in your home. Keep your home clean and make sure that you use the extractor fan in your bathroom to minimize these conditions in your home.
2.) Your Home’s Temperature
It is much more likely that silverfish will survive in your home if you allow the temperature to stay somewhere between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature range — along with the presence of darkness — is ideal for silverfish. If possible, try to keep your thermostat set outside of this temperature range to avoid silverfish thriving under ideal conditions.
3.) Lack of Strict Cleanliness
We know that it is sometimes hard to keep your home spotless, but failing to clean regularly is essentially the same as leaving food out for silverfish to feast on. The more you focus on maintaining the cleanliness of your home, the more likely you are to keep silverfish and other pests from taking refuge there.
4.) Unintentional Transmission
Unfortunately, it is sometimes the case that your actions bring silverfish into the home. Most people do not realize that silverfish are very fond of paper products, so it is very important to make sure that any paper you bring into your home is not carrying silverfish. Silverfish can reproduce very quickly, so the few moments it takes to look over the paper products you bring home can be very valuable.
