Summer usually means that families will be spending more time enjoying the outdoors. You don’t necessarily have to go far to soak up some sun; your own property can serve your outdoor needs perfectly. The formation of a yellow jacket or wasp nest, however, can quickly turn a pleasant day into one filled with pain. It helps to understand what triggers a yellow jacket, wasp, or other stinger-possessing insect to strike, as well as to call your Planet Orange bug exterminator to take care of the problem.

Common Causes of Bee and Wasp Stings

Stinging Triggers

For the most part, bees and wasps tend to leave people alone. If you don’t bother them, they won’t bother you. These insects serve a very important function. Honey bees in particular are useful for gardens and flowers. Wasps, yellow jackets, hornets, and bees tend to attack when they feel threatened, such as when someone approaches their hives. Loud noises such as lawnmowers or other powered lawn tools can trigger an attack. Some perfumes or scented body products can even incite some stinging. If you know you have a bee or wasp problem, you may want to avoid scented body products.

If You Get Stung

If you or someone you know does get stung, make sure you know what action to take. A single sting for the first time may hurt, but not pose a real threat. If the sting is from a honey bee or killer bee, the stinger may still be in the skin and require removal. You may be able to treat the sting with topical ointments. You should call a doctor immediately if there are multiple stings, the sting occurred in or around the eye, or if severe symptoms start to show (such as increasing pain, fever, pus, or drainage).

Taking Care of the Problem

If the stings resulted from the formation of a nest on your property, you may want to eradicate the problem as soon as possible. Yellow jackets and wasps will die in freezing temperatures, but you don’t have to wait until winter sets in to be rid of the pests. Planet Orange is a professional exterminator. We can come to your property and eliminate the problem for you.
